Its doubly hard because this is the twilight of the current regime. They don’t have to do anything to keep the republicans in Congress. Aside from an impeachment Bush is still in charge. He can do whatever foolish thing he wants. The worst case scenario is the other republicans distance themselves from him near the end of his tenure to establish their BS “I’m not with that guy” speeches.

Its a travesty that we continually hear these jaw dropping offenses to the nation and aside from an impeachment there is little that can be done.

I am willing to bet the administration ordered it to happen. As long as they could keep sucking the US dry they could care less.

The thing that gets me is that The Administration seems to be serving itself rather than serving the nation. Time and time again.

Bugs me.

Granted, once $#!+ spiraled out of control Clinton should have given upon his self-interest. But we’re talking about a hummer vs war (and firings, and Plame, and…)

My retort is plain and simple: those attorneys work at the president’s pleasure — they’re political appointees.

It is neither improper, unprecedented, nor illegal for him to fire any one (or all) of those attorneys — for any reason whatsoever!

In fact, Clinton fired, not several, but ALL of them when he came into office.

Where was your outrage when Bush fired Rumsfeld? He’s an appointee also…

Too bad they don’t have a prescription medication for Bush Hatred. It’s causing a lot of problems for liberals and their thought processes.

I’m not mad about the firings, who cares?

I’m mad that our Attorney General is lying. Or that, in truth, the president knew NOTHING about these firings. That bugs me.

And that is what I wrote.

It’s a non-issue. All of the things that bother you — the AG’s stupid lie, Bush’s awareness or lack of it — just don’t matter. Why? Because there’s nothing wrong with the act of firing any (or all) US attorneys!

Now if you’re going to argue that the lie itself is the reason you’re so riled, then we have about 15,000 instances of politicians lying about much more important things to address before we get to Gonzales. Like Clinton lying UNDER OATH, for example. That’s a big deal. Lying in a press conference about something that isn’t even wrong? Under the radar - just not worth the post.

Geez - you even missed me addressing Clinton’s lie above.

So. Firing US attorneys is not a big deal at all? Planning actions, holding meetings, and firing presidential appointee without the president’s knowledge is no big deal?

Being a servant to the people and then lying to them is no big deal?

No. Firing US attorneys, who by definition serve at the pleasure and appointment of the president (no legislative confirmation necessary), is not a big deal.

These professionals are there to implement the Administration’s policies regarding enforcing the law (the executive branch’s constitutional responsibility). If the president, or his cabinet head, decides to fire an attorney for any reason, that’s the end of the story. It is not illegal. It may be PURELY political (which would not be unprecedented).

The very fact that the president is able to fire attorneys that are not enforcing the laws is your tax dollars at work. Do you want the position of US attorney to come with a life term? No performance guarantees?

We can debate Justice Department policies and procedures. We can also deplore the carelessness with which hiring/firing decisions are handled. If they wanted to appoint Daffy Duck as US attorney, they can do it. And if they want to fire Daffy, then that is their right as well.
